Abstract

905,954. Spinning yarns; roller arrangements in spinning machines. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. April 7, 1959 [April 18, 1958], No. 11708/59. Classes 120 (2) and 120 (3). Yarn, comprising a core yarn, e.g. of nylon, rayon or acetate continuous filaments, with staple fibre, e.g. of acetate, triacetate and/or rayon, wrapped therearound and non-uniformly distributed to form slubs spaced along the length of the core, is made by supplying at least one roving of staple length fibre and a continuous yarn to a rotating forwarding member and periodically retarding the yarn to cause the member to slip relative thereto whereby the fibres pile-up about the yarn during slippage, and twisting together the yarn and fibres beyond the member. The member may draft the roving without breaking the continuous yarn. The slubs may be uniform or non- uniform in dimension and distribution. As shown, a creel 10 mounts rotatable bobbins 11 supplying rovings 12 which pass through a drafting device 13, comprising an apron 14 running on rollers 18, 19, control rolls 15, 16, weighted and rubber-covered roll 17, and front or draft rollers 20, 21. A creel 22 mounts a rotatable bobbin 23 supplying yarn 24 which passes through a guide 25 and feed rollers 26, 27, to the rollers 20, 21. The mechanism for driving the rolls 26, 27, e.g. a belt drive, Fig. 2 (not shown), or electric motor, may be braked and/or the transmission momentarily interrupted, as by means of a clutch or a switch, to cause slipping of the yarn 24 between rollers 26, 27: alternatively, the rolls 26, 27 run at constant speed, e.g. 20-50% slower than the peripheral speed of roller 20, and the yarn is first tensioned by a gate 43 and then passes through guides 44, 45, 46, the centre one of which is displaced periodically to lengthen the yarn path, Fig. 4. Composite yarn 29 from rollers 20, 21 passes through guide 28 to ring- spinning apparatus which winds a bobbin 33 of yarn in which bunched portions 30 are secured, as slubs 32, by the twist. As shown in Fig. 3, separate rollers 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 27 at each spindle position may be replaced by beams 40 and 42, supplying rovings 12 and yarns 24 in sheet form, and rollers extending the length of a modified spinning frame.
