Abstract

905,867. Electric heating resistances. EISLER, P. Nov. 17, 1958 [Nov. 18, 1957], No. 35912/57. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group XXII] Crimped metal foil 71 for heating, e.g., wallpaper, ceilings, floors, tapes or as radiating surfaces or for making dispensable food packages or food heaters is slit as in Fig. 1 along discontinuous cuts between one or more pairs of rollers 72, 73, the slits then being widened or expanded by the pull of other rollers 74. A bend-over guide 75 leads the foil previously stretched over the end of the lower roller 74 so that it issues with bent-over edge 76 which may be flattened out later or bent over double to strengthen the edge. In Fig. 17 an insulated film 82 is stuck to the foil by adhesive from a trough 83, the expanding in Fig. 17 being done between two endless bands of rubber &c., 77, 78. In Fig. 18 an upper roller 85 both slits and deforms the foil in co-operation with a resilient counter roller 86 and also presses one or more insulating films against the foil 87. The foil may also be bunched " up " in concertina fashion. In Fig. 4 the expanded metal foil 11 is fed along a mandrel and is bound at the same time by helical adhesive or stitched-on tape which is then slit by a cutter 35 to produce a flat stiffened sheet of foil. Expansion of the foil may alternatively be produced by squeezing the foil locally to obtain groups of " pimples " which may also vary the resistance locally. Specifications 900,515, 900,517 and 900,518 are referred to.
