Abstract

905,031. Applying adhesive tape. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Nov. 17, 1958 [Nov. 18, 1957], No. 36843/58. Addition to 782,992. Class 73. The machine for applying adhesive tape to the back seam of a shoe upper described in the parent Specification is modified by making the trigger member 110, Fig. 1, adjustable towards or away from the nip of the feed rolls 32, 34 so that the end of the tape applied may be flush with or spaced inwardly from the trailing edge of the shoe upper as desired. It is further modified by the provision of a solenoid 75 which is actuated by an electric switch operated by the trigger member 110 when it falls off the trailing edge of the shoe upper and causes the tape to be drawn against the stationary knife 80 and thereby severed, thus obviating the necessity for a delayed action clutch and association mechanism provided in the machine of Specification 782,992. The U-shaped trigger member 110, Fig. 2, has a nose portion 108 adapted to engage the shoe upper as it is passed over the guide 82, Fig. 1, and, together with the tape 44, between the feed rolls 32, 34 which apply the tape. The trigger member 110 is secured by its upper arm 112 on the slotted end of a rod 98 with capacity for adjustment towards and away from the stationary knife 80 and the feed rolls 32, 34. The rod 98 is urged downwardly by a spring 130 and the upper end of the rod carries a finger 118 adapted to engage and press a button 120, Fig. 5 (not shown), of a micro-switch 122. When the trailing edge of the shoe upper passes under the nose 108 of the trigger member, the latter falls to the position shown in Fig. 8. This results in the operation of the switch 122, Fig. 5 (not shown), and actuation of the solenoid 75 which causes the lever 64 to rock, thus raising the bar 70 and a tape guide roll 74 mounted thereon to the position shown in Fig. 8, drawing the tape against the knife 80. The feed roll 34 may be provided with a central grooved ring of steel flanked by two rubber rings which provide frictional traction for the portions of the upper adjacent to the seam.
