Abstract
Isoprene and unsaturated C4 hydrocarbons are obtained by the dehydrogenation of a gaseous mixture of 10-60% branched chain C5 hydrocarbons, of which isopentane is in excess of each and any other individual C5 hydrocarbon, and 90-40% by weight of normal C4 hydrocarbons of which n-butane is in excess of each and any other individual C4 hydrocarbon, by passing through a bed of granular dehydrogenation catalyst at a space rate of 1-6 liquid volumes of hydrocarbon per catalyst volume per hour, a pressure less than 15 inches of mercury and a temperature of 1050-1200 DEG F. the severity being such as to convert at least 10% of the C5 hydrocarbons, in a cycle in which periods of dehydrogenation are alternated with periods of catalyst regeneration while maintaining adiabatic conditions in the dehydrogenation-regeneration cycle. Isopentenes may be recycled after mixing with fresh isopentane and n-butane.
