Abstract
The invention comprises metal-containing phthalocyanine dyestuffs which contain, attached to the 41-position of the benz rings of the phthalocyanine nucleus, at least one sulphonic acid group and at least one group of the formula:- <FORM:0904227/IV (b)/1> wherein Y is hydrogen, halogen, methyl or alkoxy, X is hydrogen or a sulphonic acid group, R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms, R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms or an alkenyl radical containing 3 or 4 carbon atoms and R3 is hydrogen, a hydroxyalkyl radical containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms or an alkenyl radical containing 3 or 4 carbon atoms. The dyes which do not contain hydroxymethyl groups are made by heating together an appropriate amine and a phthalocyanine containing at least one group of the formula:- <FORM:0904227/IV (b)/2> where Z is chlorine or bromine and R6 has the meaning of R1 above except hydroxymethyl. When at least one of R1, R2 and R3 is hydroxymethyl, the dyes are made by treating the dyes where at least one of R1, R2 and R3 is hydrogen with formaldehyde. The dyes dye, pad or print cellulose textiles such as cotton viscose rayon, regenerated cellulose and linen greenish-blue shades, preferably in the presence of a substance which yields a resin on heating and a substance which is acid or yields an acid on heating and then heating the material. Resin-forming substances are methylomelamine, methylolurea, acetals, epoxides and isocyanates and acid-liberating substances are ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, ammonium thiocyanate, zinc chloride, magnesium chloride, zinc nitrate and amine hydrochlorides. In an Example (6) cotton cloth is passed through an aqueous solution containing a dye of the above type, a melamine-formaldehyde precondensate or 1 : 3-dimethylol-2-imidazolidone and ammonium thiocyanate, squeezed, dried and cured at 140 DEG C., and then heated in sodium carbonate and detergent solution, rinsed and dried.
