[Also in Group XXXV] In a winding machine, electric motors 39, 40, drive shafts 1 to which reels 43 are coupled by means of friction clutches 7, the degree of coupling being varied by electric motors 36, 37. A regulator 38 compares the currents taken by the motors 39, 40, with a reference current provided by source 41, and the error signal is used to control the adjusting motors 36, 37. In this manner, the degree of coupling provided by the clutches 7 is increased or decreased when the winding motor current is decreased or increased, so that the tension of the material being wound upon the reels 43 is kept substantially constant despite the increasing diameter of the roll as the winding operation proceeds. Alternatively, variations in the tension of the material being wound may take place according to a set programme, a programme-regulator 42 being provided for this purpose.
