Abstract

The permeability to water of granular soils is reduced by injecting therein an aqueous solution of alginic acid and an ester, and allowing the ester to hydrolyze and the solution to form a gel in the interstices of the soil. Specified solutions contain sodium alginate and ethyl acetate, and may also contain calcium or magnesium salts to assist in gel formation.
