Abstract

Polyepoxides are cured by a mixture of a curing agent and a curing assistant which comprises a polyvalent metal salt of an organic acidic compound containing up to 24 carbon atoms in the molecule. The curing assistants are salts of, for example, zinc, aluminium, iron, manganese, cobalt, lead, cadmium, barium, chromium and copper with, for example, stearic acid, linoleic acid, benzoic acid, naphthenic acid, phenol, resorcinol, organic sulphonic, sulphinic, sulphuric, phosphonic, phosphinic and phosphoric acids. The curing agent may be any conventional curing agent for polyepoxides, other than a curing assistant as defined above or a phenol-aldehyde reaction product. The curing agent may be an organic amine, e.g. dimethylamine, hexamethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, phenylenediamine and dimethylaminomethylphenol; a carboxylic acid anhydride, e.g. maleic anhydride, succinic anhydride, chlorosuccinic anhydride and tetrahydrophthalic anhydride; carboxylic acids, e.g. adipic acid and dimerized linoleic acid; organic acid phosphates; sulphonic acids, e.g. methanesulphonic acid and benzenesulphonic acid; sulphonyl halides, e.g. ethanesulphonyl chloride and benzenesulphonyl bromide; liquid organic polysulphides, e.g. the reaction product of dichlorodiethyl formal and an alkali polysulphide, liquid polyamides; organic phosphites, e.g. triphenyl phosphite, and phenols, e.g. phenol, resorcinol and bisphenol A. Polyepoxides mentioned or exemplified include, e.g. 1,8-bis(2,3-epoxypropoxy)octane, glycidyl polyethers of bisphenol A, 1,3-bis(4,5-epoxypentoxy)-5-chlorobenzene and epoxidized glycerol trioleate. Examples are given. Specifications 729,253 and 770,488 also are referred to.
