Abstract
903,814. Gear pumps and motors. VICKERSARMSTRONG (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Sept. 15, 1960 [July 30, 1959], No. 26189/59. Class 110 (2). In a gear pump or motor comprising a casing housing three gears or any even number of gears greater than three disposed in a closed chain, the middle gear of three gears or each alternate gear in the chain of gears is rotatable about a centre adjustable with respect to fixed centres about which the remaining gears rotate by control means to move the middle gear or each alternate gear into narrower mesh with one of its adjacent gears and into wider mesh with the other of its adjacent gears so as to vary delivery in the case of a pump or speed in the case of a motor. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a casing 4 having a supply port 20 and a delivery (or outlet) port 21 and closed by end plates 2, 3 houses intermeshing gears 6, 7, 8. The gear 7 is mounted on needle rollers 15 on the central eccentric portion 16 of a shaft 17 rotatable in bearings 18, 19. A control lever (not shown) may be fitted on the squared projecting end of the shaft 17 to adjust the eccentricity and the amount of intermeshing between the gear 7 and its adjacent gears 6 and 8. In another embodiment, four gears 24... 27, Fig. 3, are disposed in a closed chain. The space 46 enclosed by the gears communicates through a port 45, Fig. 4, and a pipe 44 with a liquid supply source and the space 48 surrounding the gears with a delivery (or outlet) port. The gears 25, 27 are mounted on a common control plate 29 having a shaft 34 extending outside of the casing fitted with a lever 35 movable over a scale 37, Fig. 6. Adjustment of bolts 41 adjusts the centres of gears 25, 27 so, e.g., gear 25 is moved closer to gear 24 and away from gear 26 and gear 27 closer to gear 26 and away from gear 24. The gear 26 is eccentrically mounted on a member having a shaft extending through and rotatable from outside the casing so that the gear 26 can be adjusted towards the gear 24 to allow for wear of the gear teeth. Screws co-operate with arcuate slots to lock the member in its adjusted position. The adjustable gears may be ad. justed to give zero flow or reverse flow.
