[Also. in Group XIII] Braking of an electrically-driven spin drier is effected through the end surface of the rotor moving downwardly into contact with a braking surface under the action of a helical or spiral spring between the rotor and the driving shaft, which spring is stressed by the relative angular movement between the rotor and shaft when Current is supplied to the motor. The shaft 2 of the spur basket mounts the rotor 3 so that it has limited axial movement between collars 9, 10 through the interengagement between the rotor and shaft of helical splines 8. A helical spring 14 is connected between the rotor and shaft which is stressed when the motor is energized, the rotor transmitting the drive to the shaft and spin basket when it reaches the collar 9. De-energizing the motor allows the spring 14 to move the rotor axially down the shaft to bring a friction surface 13 thereon into contact with the friction surface of a brake 11.
