[Also in Groups VIII and XXII] A semi-automatic machine for riveting comprises a rivet feed mechanism controlled by a coupling mechanism, a camshaft controlled by a separate coupling and exchangeable cams controlling respectively the perforating apparatus, the feed tong apparatus, the lower punch device, the device for holding down the holding socket, and a rivet separating device controlled by a gear through the medium of the coupling mechanism, the exchange of cams on the said camshaft as well as the exchange of the riveting punch and the provision of a further feed device enabling the machine to be converted for carrying out different operations, e.g. double riveting, perforating or fixing press-buttons. The cam-shaft 3 is actuated by a wormwheel 5 freely supported on the cam-shaft and provided with a grooved wheel 91 for engaging a cam for controlling a cam-coupling 4 operated by a pedal 12. The worm-wheel 5 is connected with the spur wheel 7 of the drive of a counter shaft 8 and is in mesh with a worm shaft 11 driven through belt pulleys from an electric motor 90. A cam 19 on the cam-shaft actuates the spring-loaded vertical shaft 124 carrying the work-holder arm 96 through a rod 21 and a pivoted two-armed lever 22. The workpiece, e.g. the hinge portion of a bag hasp, is introduced into the recess 85 of a carrier plate 84 and set screws 87 are adjusted to the pitch of the rivets. The distance of the rivets from the edge of the hasp is set by adjustable abutments 88. Another cam 24 on the shaft actuates a spring-loaded horizontal rack 26 which rotates the vertically reciprocable punching rod 28 which carries the punch 29 on an extending arm. At the same time the cam 24 also actuates a two-armed lever 30, the lower arm of which is linked with a lever 33 actuating the lower punching die 34. The horizontally movable die 34 is dovetailed at 99 for accommodating a spring-loaded partition 35 which retains the waste material on punching and allows said material to fall through a hole 102 when the lower die returns to its initial position. Thus the waste is prevented from falling on the lower punch 61 (Fig. 10). A further cam 37 on the cam-shaft operates a pivoted lever 39 for reciprocating the punching rod 28. A further cam 41 operates a two-armed lever 42 mounted on the counter-shaft 8 and the lower arm is pivoted to a rack 44 engaging gears 46 in mesh with a rack 48 which is provided with tongs 16 for feeding the rivets. The spring-controlled jaw 50 of the tongs is arranged as a double-armed lever which is controlled by a slot 51 provided in the lower rivet guide 15 (Figs. 5, 7 and 8). A further cam 52 on the cam-shaft actuates a two-armed lever 55 connected through linkage to the carrier 60 of the lower punch 61 (Fig. 4) which has a spring-loaded point 62 for intruding on to the hollow rivet and releasing it from the tongs 16. A further cam 63 on the cam-shaft acts simultaneously with the lower punch 61 to operate a two-armed lever 65 which reciprocates the riveting rod 69 carrying the riveting punch 70. A coupling device 76 is mounted at one end of the counter-shaft 8 for coupling a chain gear 75 with the rivet feeder 116 (Fig. 1). When a rivet is released from the feeder it falls shank first into a separating device 114 wherefrom by gravity it falls along the lower guide bar 123 on the bottom of the lower guide 15, in a vertical position with the head pointing downwards and awaits the feed tongs 16. The cams and the lower arm 110 may be readily exchanged for riveting in difficult places, e.g. corners of bags, cases, trunks or shoe parts or for riveting cardboard articles.
