Abstract

Wool is dyed with a 1 : 2-chromium or 1 : 2-cobalt complex of azo dyestuffs, the complex containing a single acid solubilising group, in the presence of a compound containing at least one basic nitrogen atom to which is bound at least one residue containing a polyglycol ether chain, the molecule of the compound containing at least three <FORM:0902374/IV (b)/1> groups and at least four carbon atoms not belonging to such a group, and also in the presence of an anionic surface-active compound which has no dyestuff character but possesses affinity for wool. Suitable compounds containing at least one basic nitrogen atom are reaction products of at least three molecular proportions of an a : b -alkylene oxide with one molecular proportion of a compound containing at least one basic primary or secondary amino group, or a basic tertiary amino group and also an alcoholic hydroxyl group, or a salt, or quaternary ammonium salt, or an acid ester, derived therefrom, and many examples are given. Suitable anionic compounds are alkali metal sulphonates of benzene hydrocarbons having a long aliphatic chain, alkali metal monosulphonates of 2-alkylbenzimidazoles containing a higher alkyl radical, alkali metal sulphonates of alkyl-substituted naphthalene, sulphonated condensation products of hydroxyaryl compounds of the benzene series with formaldehyde, reaction products of naphthalene sulphonic acids with formaldehyde and reaction products of a phenol or thiophenol with an alkali metal sulphide, alkali metal sulphite or sulphite-formaldehyde. Dyeing is preferably effected in a weakly acid bath at 80 DEG -100 DEG C. Examples are given.
