Abstract
902,265. Supply systems depending on variable voltage generators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 27, 1961 [Feb. 19, 1960], No. 6005/60. Class 38 (4). A generator GE for use in vehicle lighting and ignition systems and preferably of the A.C. output, permanent magnet type, comprises a high voltage output winding W1, supplying a head-lamp HL, and a low-voltage winding W2 which supplies an ignition circuit IGN, a battery BA and a low-voltage lighting circuit LW through a bridge rectifier RE. Winding W1 supplies one of two filaments FA1, FA2 selected by a switch SW. A resistor RS1 in parallel with the lamp filaments prevents overloading of the lighting circuit due to the rise in output voltage with increased generator speed, by dissipating an increasing amount of current which flows through it due to a rise in the lamp filament resistance with an increase in temperature. Additional control means may be provided if necessary. Low-voltage winding W2 feeds a bridge rectifier RE, the D.C. output of which supplies a battery BA through switch SW1 and an energizing coil RW of an electromagnetic relay. Contacts CO of the relay short a resistor PRS of a resistor combination RS2, PRS, shunt-connected across the winding W2 so as to divert part of its output current when a predetermined current flowing through the energizing coil RW has been reached, which might damage the battery. The contacts CO controlled by coil RW may be replaced by an electronic switching device, possibly of the semiconductor type, responsive to a predetermined voltage. In order that a high output may be obtained from the generator its field magnets may be formed from alloys containing aluminium and cobalt.
