Abstract

A partially melted and expanded clay which may be collected as discrete particles or allowed to conglomerate to a cohesive body, is continously produced by forming a plastic mass from powdered clay and water; moulding the mass into uniform small units and allowing such units to fall vertically through a furnace out of contact with the walls and each other.
