Abstract

902,049. Cooling systems for engines. COVENTRY CLIMAX ENGINES Ltd. March 6, 1961 [Feb. 15, 1960], No. 5335/60. Class 64 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] In a marine propulsion unit in which a pump driven by reciprocating internal-combustion engine propels the craft by expelling a jet of water through an outlet, the pump is mounted below the engine crank-shaft and a part of its casing forms part of the casing of an oil sump and also includes a jacket in communication with a cooling water circuit of the engine. Thus the water pumped to propel the craft cools the oil and coolant of the engine. The pump 2 in the form shown is of the axial flow turbine type and has an inlet 7 and outlet 9. The engine 1 drives a crank-shaft 11 which carries a gear 12. A chain 13 transmits the crank-shaft drive to a gear 14 which is connected to the end of a pump driving shaft 15 by a Centrifugal clutch 30. The engine thus rotates the impeller blades 19 of the pump. The water flowing through the pump cools the oil in the sump 22 and the engine coolant circulating through the jacket 23. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), two engines are disposed above the pump and have a common water cooling system. Either or both may be used to drive the pump.
