A wooden panel with a wide channel along one face thereof has the bottom and side walls of the channel covered with sheet metal or plastic. The panel may be constructed in one piece, or side portions may be joined to the longitudinal edges of a substantially plane board by glue and/or tongue-and-groove jointing. As shown in Fig. 1, the channel in the panel 1 is covered by a metal strip 2 having upturned margins 7, and adjacent panels 1, la and 1, 1b are joined by channel strips 3. The margins 7 may extend over the edge fillets 1<SP>1</SP> into the space between adjacent panels, and I-shaped members may be inserted into these spaces. As shown in Fig. 5, a tongue-and-groove connection 12 may be provided between adjacent panels, and the bottom of the channel is shaped as shown to a higher central line, the covering sheet 14 being similarly shaped to take up expansion effects. A junction member may be provided between adjacent covering sheets. Flanges may be provided at the top of the edge fillets to hold the edges of the upturned margins of the covering sheets. An end-joint may be provided between edge fillets by the nailing-on of a joining piece over which the covering sections can snap. With separate edge fillets, junction between adjacent lengths of panel may be achieved by staggering the edge fillet junctions with respect to the board junctions.
