Abstract
901,234. Positive clutches. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. Nov. 8, 1960 [Nov. 14, 1959], No. 38392/60. Class 80 (2). In an electromagnetic positive clutch of the kind wherein clutch teeth 7 fast with an armature 3 are moved axially into engagement with clutch teeth 6 on an electromagnet 2 keyed to a driving-shaft 1, the electromagnet 2 and/or armature 3 are/ is so shaped to provide an air gap 8 between the electromagnet and armature when the clutch is engaged. As shown, the armature is tapered so that on engagement it only abuts the magnet adjacent to the shaft 1. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the armature is formed as a parallel sided disc with an annular projection adjacent to the shaft 1. In Fig. 3 (not shown) a ring of non-magnetic material is partially inserted into the magnet body and on engagement the armature only abuts the ring. In Fig. 4 (not shown) a non-ferrous ring of foil is attached to the armature. The air gap provided may be between a few thousandths of an inch to about one-hundredth of an inch.
