Abstract

900,849. Overload release clutches. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. May 5, 1959 [Feb. 6, 1958], No. 3972/58. Class 80 (2). An overload release clutch, especially for a turbine transmission, comprises rotary members 11, 12 with tapered helical teeth 15, 16 subjected to the axial thrust of a series of Belle. ville spring washers 20, the internal spaces between which are occupied by pressure liquid supplied through radial passages 24, 25. Under normal conditions the washers 20 maintain the teeth 15, 16 in engagement, at the same time permitting limited relative movement at the tooth flanks for shock absorption, but if overloading occurs the tips 19 of the teeth, which are backed off at an angle of about 5 degrees, engage and a latch device 26 becomes effective to maintain the clutch elements disengaged until reset manually. In a modification. Fig. 7 (not shown), latching is effected by centrifugal pins, subjected also to fluid pressure, the pins operating to hold the clutch teeth entirely separated to prevent chattering.
