Abstract
The viscosity index and pour-point of lubricating oil are improved by adding thereto the product obtained by reacting oil-soluble polymers of aliphatic acrylic and/or methacrylic esters first with a phosphorus sulphide and then with ammonia or an organic base. Preferred polymers are those derived by the copolymerization of C12-C18 mixed fatty alcohols methacrylate with one or more nitrogen-containing monomers, e.g. acrylonitrile, acrylamide or methacrylamide; with methyl methacrylate as an optional further comonomer. The phosphorus sulphide may be replaced in part by other readily decomposed phosphorus compounds, e.g. phosphorus chlorides, phosphorus oxychloride, phosphorus thiochloride, thiophosphoric esters and chlorothiophosphoric esters, or mixtures of such compounds. The preparation is described of lubricating oil compositions containing the above-described modified polymers together with zinc alkyldithiophosphate.ALSO:Oil-soluble homopolymers or copolymers of C8-C20 esters of acrylic and/or methacrylic acids are reacted first with a phosphorus sulphide and then with ammonia or an organic base. Copolymers specified are: (1) methacrylamide-methyl methacrylate-C12-C18 mixed fatty alcohols methacrylate, (2) acrylonitrileacrylamide-C12-C18 mixed fatty alcohols methacrylate, (3) acrylonitrile-methyl methacrylate-C12-C18 mixed fatty alcohols methacrylate and (4) methacrylamide-acrylonitrile-methyl methacrylate-C12-C18 mixed fatty alcohols methacrylate. The phosphorus sulphide may be formed in situ by the use of elemental sulphur and phosphorus, and may be replaced in part by other readily decomposed phosphorus compounds, e.g. phosphorus chlorides, phosphorus oxychloride, phosphorus thiochloride, thiophosphoric esters and chlorthiophosphoric esters, or mixtures of such compounds. Organic bases specified are ethanolamines, tert. octylamine or 3-lauryloxypropylamine.
