Abstract

899,752. Boring earth &c. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. May 18, 1960 [May 20, 1959], No. 17182/59. Class 85. A slips mechanism comprises wedges 12 having backing members 9 surrounded by a retaining ring 15 allowing radial movement of the wedges. The members 9 slide in guideways 8 of a base-plate 5. Rotation of the ring clockwise by a jack 18, 22 causes projections 25 to engage projections 26 on the members 9 to force the wedges inwardly against a spring 27. Links 29 joined at 31 to members 9 and having slots 32 engaging pins 33 on the ring are radial when the projections 25, 26 are just in register as the ring is turned anti-clockwise and hold the members 9 against the spring. Further anti-clockwise movement of the ring releases the members 9. Each wedge is connected to a member 9 by a lever 34 having an outer arm 42, co-operating with a cam track 43 on the ring to apply a downward force to the wedge as the ring is turned clockwise. Rubber bushes in which the pins 35, 38 are mounted are pre-loaded to provide an upward force on each wedge to disengage the wedges when the ring is turned fully anti-clockwise and the weight is removed from the drill pipes.
