Abstract

Acetic acid is obtained by reacting methanol with carbon monoxide at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of cobalt and/or cobalt compounds together with iodine and/or iodine compounds and 25% to 45% water relative to all reactants. A mixture of cobalt acetate and hydriodic acid is preferred. Specification 669,760 is referred to.
