Abstract

The tendency of a gasoline containing unsaturated hydrocarbons to form gum is reduced by hydrogenating the gasoline in the presence of a supported catalyst containing nickel (which, under the operating conditions, is present in major proportion as elemental nickel), the hydrogen consumption being at least 120 standard cubic feet/barrel but below that at which hydrogenation of mono-olefins and/or aromatics exceeds the amount which would give a final product having a research octane number (with 1,5 ml. tetraethyl lead/Imperial gallon) more than one number below the research octane number (with 1,5 ml. tetraethyl lead/ Imperial gallon) of the feedstock. The catalyst support may be activated or deactivated alumina, a Group II metal carbonate, an oxide of calcium, barium, strontium or magnesium, sepiolite, diatomaceous earth (or firebrick derived therefrom), silicon carbide, quartz, carbon or pumice. The support may be mixed with an asily decomposable salt of nickel (e.g. the nitrate or acetate) and the mixture pelletted, or alternatively the support may be impregnated with an aqueous solution of the nickel salt and then dried. In each case, the supported catalyst may be roasted and then activated by heating in a current of hydrogen. Where the nickel salt employed is the formate, the roasting step may be omitted and activation effected by heating in a current of inert gas. The hydrogenated gasoline may be rerun to remove a small proportion of heavy ends. In the examples, gasoline obtained by the steam-cracking of a petroleum fraction is hydrogenated in the presence of a nickel catalyst supported on chalk, alumina or sepiolite. Specifications 848,232, 899,652 and 899,654 are referred to.
