Abstract

899,552. Joint-making packings. GOETZEWERKE F. GOETZE A.G. Feb. 17, 1959 [April 5, 1958], No. 5508/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 122 (3). A metal gasket, particularly for the cylinder head of an internal-combustion engine, comprises one or more openings each surrounded by a ridge and is provided with an elastic coating consisting of a lacquer filled with zinc dust and/or flake graphite. The filler is stirred into the lacquer, which may consist of rubber with alkylated phenols and linseed oil or tung oil, the zinc dust being advantageously pre-treated with vapours of a higher fatty acid. The lacquer may be applied in different layers having different thicknesses, hardnesses and corrosion and temperature resisting qualities; corrosion resistance is increased by adding sodium or ammonium benzoate and/or nitrous acid ester and/or chromates. The final layer may be a clear lacquer and a dusting of talcum may be provided on this layer. Where more than two layers of lacquer are provided, one layer need extend over only part of the surface of the gasket.
