Abstract

899,285. Electrical measuring systems. TAYLOR, TAYLOR & HOBSON Ltd. Oct. 28, 1958 [Nov. 1, 1957], No.34164/57. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XIX] Surface testing apparatus -has means for retracting the stylus through a slot in a workengaging member. Fig. 1 shows a surface testing apparatus of the type described in Specification 892,972 but in which the stylus B and the skid J are retractable beneath the surface of the slotted worksupport A<SP>2</SP> by means of a cam K<SP>6</SP> driven by the electric motor K. Alternatively the stylus B may be retracted electromagnetically with the aid of a cam-operated switch. In another arrangement, two cams are geared to the main driving-shaft so that the skid J and the stylus B make a number of traverses across the surface of the workpiece before they are retracted by one of the cams. In this arrangement the piezoelectric crystal or other generating transducer coupled to the stylus B is connected to a heavily damped indicating instrument to indicate average roughness. The Specification also describes detector mounting arrangements, releasable detector couplings and traverse control arrangements substantially the same as those described in Specification 892,529.
