Abstract

A seed dressing comprises a benzaldoxime having the general formula <FORM:0898916/I/1> or one of its salts or acyl derivatives, in which X represents a chlorine or bromine atom and Y represents a chlorine or bromine atom, a thiocyano or nitro group, as ubstituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, an alkoxy group or an amino or substituted amino group, and n is 0, 1 or 2. When n is 2 the substituents represented by Y may be the same or different. The dressing may be a wettable powder containing a powdered solid, preferably inorganic, diluent. The dressing may be a solution of the benzaldoxime in a water-insoluble hydrocarbon oil, which may be emulsified with water. Specifications 772,193 and 898,915 are referred to.ALSO:A herbicidal composition comprises a benzaldoxime having the general formula <FORM:0898916/VI/1> or one of its salts or acyl derivatives, in which X represents a chlorine or a bromine atom and Y represents a chlorine, bromine atom, a thiocyano group, a nitro group, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, an alkoxy group or an amino or substituted amino group, and n equals 0, 1 or 2, where n equals 2 the substituents represented by Y may be the same or different, together with a wetting or dispersing agent. The composition may also comprise the active ingredient together with a petroleum hydrocarbon fraction a water-in-oil emulsion or an oil-in-water emulsion. The composition also comprises the active ingredient and a solid diluent which composition may be formulated as a dust or a wettable powder and preferably contains a dispersing or wetting agent and may also contain a stabilizing agent preferably an acid neutralizing stabilizer e.g. ethanolamine, urea, ammonium bicarbonate and hexamethylene tetramine. The stability may also be increased by the addition of glycols, polyglycols or alcohols e.g. diacetone alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. Specified active ingredients 2 : 6-dichlorobenzaldoxime, 2 : 6 - dibromobenzaldoxime, 2 - chloro - 6 - bromobenzaldoxime, 2-chloro - 6 - nitrobenzaldoxime, 2 - chloro - 6-thiocyanobenzaldoxime, 2 - chloro - 6 - alkylbenzaldoxime e.g. 2 - chloro - 6 - ethylbenzaldoxime, 2 - chloro - 6 - methylbenzaldoxime, 2 - chloro - 6 - alkoxy benzaldoximes, e.g. 2-chloro - 6 - methoxy benzaldoxime and 2-chloro - 6 - alkylamino benzaldoximes, the sodium or potassium salts of banzaldoxime, and its acetyl derivatives which may be those derived from ordinary unsubstituted aliphatic carboxylic acids, such as for example the acetyl derivatives or they may be derived from substituted carboxylic acids such as for example the dimethyl carbamyl derivative.
