Abstract

898,598. Automatic lathes. HAHN, E. C., [trading as INDEX-WERKE KOMM.-GES. HAHY & TESKY]. June 2, 1960 [June 30, 1959], No. 19600/60. Class 83 (3). An automatic lathe is provided with means for stopping the spindle in a number of predetermined positions so that auxiliary operations may be carried out on a workpiece such as cross-drilling. The lathe-spindle 19, Fig. 1, carries a workpiece 220 which is to be crossdrilled at a number of positions by a drill-head 111 mounted on a cross-slide 110. The spindle is driven for the working operation in forward or reverse directions from sprockets 32, 33, when a clutch 25 is engaged. A control lever 36 for the clutch is moved by a cam sleeve 39 on an auxiliary control shaft which also drives a cam 96, Fig. 2, for disengaging the locking lever of the indexing mechanism. The main clutch is brought to the neutral position prior to indexing and is braked and then reversed and driven slowly by an electromagnetic device 88, Fig. 1, with an electrically operated clutch 87 controlled by a switch 75. A control lever 55, connecting rod 70 and bell-crank 200 normally holds the locking or stop lever 222 out of engagement against the pressure of a spring 280. On automatic release of the control lever 55, when the clutch 25 is moved to the neutral position, the switch 75 is operated so that the auxiliary braking and drive device 88 is switched in. On slow reversal of the spindle a spring-pressed pin 144, Fig. 6, on the stop-lever 222 bears against the periphery of a disc 130, Figs. 2 and 6, arranged on the spindle adjacent the notched indexing disc 125. The latch 140 on the stop lever is thus prevented from engaging an indexing notch until the pin 144 enters a recess 135 in disc 130. When this occurs the pin is also forced sideways and bears against the face of disc 130 until the end of the indexing operations. The lock or latch 140 is now free to engage the notch in the indexing disc adjacent the recess 135 in the direction of rotation. The latch is disengaged by cam disc 96 and the spindle rotates to the next notch &c. One of the indexed positions may be used for inserting a new workpiece in the spindle chuck.
