898,172. Blasting. TURNER, H. C. Jan. 23, 1961 [Jan. 27, 1960], No. 2912/60. Class 60. A method of treating leather or synthetic plastic articles, such as shoes, wearing apparel, handbags and cases, comprises subjecting the surface to be treated to a stream of fluid containing hard particulate material, the fluid being in a cooled condition so that frictional heating of the treated surface is minimised. The leather or plastic material is cleaned by the method without affecting its nature, suede or like materials retaining their nap. Leather is decolourised by the method without closing the pores so that it can be re-dyed. The hard particulate material may be oat husks, cocoanut shell, crushed iron shot, aluminium oxide, carborundum, corundum, glass beads or granite chips or mixtures thereof. The fluid may be gaseous air, nitrogen or carbon dioxide. The cooled condition of the fluid may result from a change of state, e.g. if carbon dioxide is used it is obtained from a cylinder in which it is stored in liquid form under pressure. A blasting gun is used, the diameter of the nozzle orifice being between 0.0075 inch and 0.50 inch The pressure of the particle-laden fluid stream issuing from the nozzle ranges from 0.5 p.s.i. to 300 p.s.i. The particles are from 0.002 inch to 0.060 inch diameter. The treatment may be in two stages, cleaning being followed by finishing.
