Abstract

An incandescent electric lamp comprises a filament of tantalum carbide together with a carbide of zirconium, hafnium, titanium, thorium, vanadium, mobium, molybdenum, tungsten or uranium in an oxygen free atmosphere of hydrogen and volatilized carbon. A halogen and an inert gas may also be present. The filament may be formed in situ by constructing the lamp with a filament of an alloy of the metals to be used, e.g. tungsten and tantalum, sealing the lamp after incorporating the constituents of the atmosphere and then converting the filament to carbide by the passage of a current to yield a filament temperature of 3100 DEG C.
