Abstract

898,095. Moulding stretched thermoplastic Sheets. SWEDLOW Inc. Oct. 5, 1959, No. 33716/59. Class 87(2). A sheet 100 of thermoplastic material, e.g. polystyrene or an acrylic resin, is shaped to form e.g. an aircraft canopy by mechanically shaping the sheet over a die whilst cold or as shown in an oven. The die and the sheet may be preheated. The sheet is then held by clamps 50 and heated to relieve stresses in the material. The sheet is then removed from the oven, the clamps released, a clamping ring 51 and retaining ring 60 placed on the sheet, and the clamps 50 reset. The sheet is returned to the oven and heated to a temperature higher than' that used previously for the manual shaping operation. A fabric blanket 65 having a central opening is placed over the sheet to concentrate the heat in the centre of the sheet. Low pressure air is supplied through a pipe 41 and a fabric diffuser 43 to blow the sheet out into the desired form, which may be judged by a template 120. In a modification, suction may be applied to one side of the sheet instead of applying air pressure. A coolant may be supplied to a jacket 32 and high pressure air is supplied to an inflatable seal 55. A modified form of seal between the sheet and the die is described with reference to Fig. 12 (not shown). The Specification includes examples giving specific temperatures and pressures.
