Abstract

897,834. Propelling rail vehicles. GARBERS, E. Oct. 26, 1960 [April 27, 1960; May 11, 1960], No. 36751/60. Class 104 (2). In an arrangement for assembling trains in a train assembling track of a marshalling yard a plurality of trolleys 4<SP>1</SP> to 4<SP>20</SP> distributed over a corresponding number of sections of the track are each arranged to be coupled to the pulling run 9<SP>1</SP> of an endless rope for propelling a vehicle along a respective section of the track and a transverse stop 10, at the end of each section effects the uncoupling of the trolley of the respective section from a pulling run 9<SP>1</SP> and the coupling of the trolley to the return run 9<SP>2 </SP>of the endless rope to return the trolley to its initial position, the trolley following the respective trolley being coupled to the pulling run 9<SP>1</SP> to propel a car along the next section of the track. The trolleys 41 to 4<SP>20</SP> are mounted on wheels 15 running on the lower flanges of and between a rail 2 of the main track and an auxiliary rail 3. The apparatus operates as follows. A car travelling on rails 1, 2 on entering the train assembly track actuates a switch 11 to cause a motor 8 to drive an endless cable 9<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>2</SP>. Further forward movement of the car closes a switch 5<SP>1</SP>, if the car enters the first track section, to energize a magnet 7<SP>1</SP> which depresses a lever 29, Fig. 4, which lever 29 in turn pivots an arm 12 on the trolley 4<SP>1</SP> to disengage a lockpawl 20 from a hook 21 provided on a pivotallymounted lever 19. The lever 19, on being freed, is now pivoted by a spring 23 into a position in which a roller 24 mounted thereon engages a wheel 25 of a car to propel such car along the tracks 1, 2. The lever 12 on being moved by the lever 29 also moves, through the intermediary of a cam 26, a control-rod 30 which rod 30 by means of a pin 31 rotates an eccentric 32 to press a wedge 33 against the pulling rope 91 thus causing the trolley and hence the car to be propelled forwards. The control-rod 30, on reaching the end of the section, abuts the transverse stop 10 and is moved rearwardly to rotate, through pins 31, 34, eccentrics 32, 35. The eccentric 32 on being rotated permits the wedge 33 to release the pulling rope 91 and the eccentric 35 presses a wedge 36 against the return run 9<SP>2</SP> thus returning the trolley to its initial position. The lever 19 is returned and locked in its inoperative position either through the acceleration due to the trolley being returned to its initial position or to the lever being depressed by the wheel of a car. A counting mechanism actuated at each section by stops 61 to 6<SP>21</SP> is provided to ensure that cars are not propelled into a section of the track already occupied. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 6 (not shown), two endless cables are provided, one cable for moving the trolley forwardly and the other for moving the trolley rearwardly, preferably at a greater speed than the forward speed.
