Abstract

896,923. Stamping; forging; welding by pressure; jointing. GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION. Aug. 26, 1959 [Aug. 28. 1958], No. 29207/59. Class 83 (4). A method of forming metal, e.g. stamping, embossing, upsetting and welding, comprises setting up a predetermined varying magnetic field and maintaining a metal workpiece to be formed within the magnetic field so that sufficient energy is transferred from the magnetic field to the metal to form the metal in the desired manner. In an embodiment for necking a copper or aluminium tube 20 the varying magnetic field is set up by passing a current pulse through a coil or solenoid 11 surrounding the tube by means of a high capacity condenser 13 in series with switching means 14, e.g. an ignitron, thyratron or spark gap. The tube is held in clamps 21. When a current pulse is applied to the solenoid a varying magnetic field is set up which induces an electromotive force in the workpiece which, in turn, causes a high current to flow around the workpiece. The interaction of the induced current and the magnetic field causes the workpiece to be deformed. A die (not shown), may be inserted in the workpiece to define or limit the deformation. In another embodiment two tubes or a tube and a rod are crimped together by passing a current pulse as hitherto through a loop 22 (Fig. 3). A plurality of spaced loops 22 are used for forming a series of crimps or corrugations in a tube. In another embodiment for impressing a pattern into the surface of a flat metal sheet, the conductor 27 is wound on to a spiral and a die 28 is adjustably supported above the conductor. The metal sheet is placed between the conductor and the die so that when the electromotive force is generated the sheet is forced against the die and the die pattern is embossed on the sheet. In a further embodiment a metal tube is corrugated by placing the tube in a split die 34 having internal corrugations and inserting within the tube a conductor 33 which is supplied with a current pulse to effect the corrugating operation. The spiral type conductor may be used to surface weld a metal sheet to a non- metallic sheet.
