Abstract

896,501. Parachutes. G. Q. PARACHUTE CO. Ltd. July 3, 1959 [July 4, 1958], No. 21491/58. Class 4. A parachute pack comprises a wrap or cover for a parachute canopy and at least part of its rigging lines, means for keeping this wrap normally closed, an outer cover or pack base to be worn by the parachutist, means for keeping this outer cover normally closed with the wrap stowed inside it, and a handle secured upon the wrap to enable the parachutist to throw it to a distance, initial operation of the handle releasing the cover and a subsequent movement of the handle serving to throw the wrap to a distance, the wrap being then opened by the pull of the rigging lines, thereby allowing the deployment of the parachute. The wrap or cover 10 which encloses a reserve parachute 11 is provided at one end with loops 14 which are passed through slots 15 in the other end, the loops being retained by the shroud lines 16 of parachute 11. The shroud lines 16 are drawn through the overlapping ends of the wrap 10 and laid first through loops 14 and subsequently through other loops 17 which form extensions of elastic tapes 18 secured by ties 20 to beckets 21, the tapes serving to unwrap the cover when loops 14 are freed. A pocket 22 of substantially cruciform shape has two side flaps 23 slidably mounted on tapes 18, a top flap 24 and a lower flap 27 secured to another elastic tape 30, the folded end 32 of which is sewn to cover 10. A handle 25, secured to cover 22, carries two rip-cord cables 26 having pins 28 which engage locking cones 29 fixed on the outer face of cover 10. The shroud lines 16 after passing through loops 17 are passed through loops 36 attached to an outer cover formed with side closure flaps 34, end flaps 35 and lift straps 37 for attachment to the parachutist's harness. The folded wrap 10 and parachute 11 are laid on the rigging lines 16 on the outer cover, the flaps 34, 35 of which are folded over the wrap with their eyelets 39 engaging cores 29 to be locked by pins 28. In operation the parachutist initially pulls handle 25 to free flaps 34, 35 and then throws the wrap sideways so that lines 16 will initially draw out of loops 14 and 17 to free a pilot parachute (not shown) and reserve parachute 11, the pull of these subsequently withdrawing lines 16 out of the loops 36 in the cover.
