Abstract
896,423. Ear instruments. GARDNER, W. J., and BOLT, BERANEK & NEWMAN Inc. Nov. 18, 1959 [Dec. 10, 1958], No. 39192/59. Class 81 (2). Apparatus for relieving pain during dental operations comprises a pair of earphones which mask ambient sounds, means for supplying audible noise signals and means for supplying audible intelligible signals to the earphones, and volume controls for the noise signals and the intelligible signals, respectively. Each of the pair of earphones 17, 17<SP>1</SP> is connected through an amplifier A, A<SP>1</SP> and mixing resistances R 1 , R 2 , R 1 <SP>1</SP>, R 2 <SP>1</SP> with a generator 7 of intelligible stereophonic audible signals, e.g. music, and a noise generator 2. A filter 3 determines the frequency band of the noise received. Each generator is associated with attenuators 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, 10, 101 and potentiometers 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, 13, 13<SP>1</SP> by which the sound reaching the earphones may be adjusted. A switch S 2 is ganged with sliders 8, 8<SP>1</SP> of the noise generator potentiometer so that for low intensity levels of the noise received the output leads 14, 14<SP>1</SP> of the noise generator are short-circuited to prevent noise reaching the other generator. Another switch S 3 enables the operator to insert resistances R 3 , R 3 <SP>1</SP> in the circuit to the earphones to reduce the intensity of sound reaching the earphones sufficiently for the patient to be spoken to using a microphone 37. Signals of a level 100 db. above 0.0002 microbars may be obtained from the apparatus.
