Abstract

896,142. Coating sheet material. GENERAL FOODS CORPORATION. Nov. 3, 1959 [April 16, 1959], No. 37311/59. Addition to 887,932. Class 95 [Also in Group VIII] Individual carton blanks having a smooth glossy coating of a thermoplastic agent are produced by applying a coating of the molten agent to one side of each of a series of blanks 10, 13, 14, 30 to 32, 36 to 38 (Fig. 1), e.g. by rollers 16, 18, 20 rotating in a bath of the agent; moving the coated surfaces of the blanks into intimate contact with a smooth, mirror-finished casting surface, e.g. a cold casting roll 23 against which the blanks are urged, e.g. by an impression roll 24, to become immovably disposed, moving the casting surface to carry the blanks towards and through a cold liquid bath, e.g. a waterbath 27, in which they are submerged for a sufficient time to ensure solidification of the coating, the blanks then being peeled from the casting surface. Cold water from a spout 26 may be applied to the uncoated side of the blank, splashing of the impression roll being prevented by a baffle 29. In the embodiment shown in Fig. I, the blanks, after emerging -from the water bath, are pressed between the casting roll and a rubber wringer roll, peeled from the casting roll by a knife 34, and removed by a conveyer 35. The knife 34 may be supplemented or even replaced by a nozzle directing a jet of air between the blanks and the casting roll 23. The knife may be located below the level of the water in the bath, and a pair of conveyer belts, also partially beneath such level, used to collect the coated blanks. The blanks may consist of paper of various types, plastic films, metal foil, paperboard and the like and the thermoplastic agent may consist of paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, or polyethylene or polypropylene of low molecular weight, or mixture of these substances. The cold casting roll 23 may be surfaced with a sheet of polyvinyl acetate or of copper or aluminium foil, or with a lacquer of silicone or other resin, or it may be of polished metal, or be chromium- or nickel-plated. It may be replaced by an endless belt having a mirrorfinished surface.
