Abstract

The invention comprises the stereo-isomers and the racemate of butane-1,2,3,4-tetrol-1,4-di-(methanesulphonate). The compounds are prepared by treatment of the appropriate isomer of 1,4-dibromobutane-2,3-diol with silver methanesulphonate. In Example (1) DL-1,4-dibromo butane-2,3-diol is dissolved in anhydrous acetonitrile and silver methanesulphonate is added. The mixture is boiled under reflux, the silver bromide filtered off and, after purification, DL-threitol-1,4-di-(methanesulphonate) is obtained. Examples (2)-(4) describe the preparation in a similar manner of the 1,4-di-(methanesulphonates) of erythritol, D-threitol and L-threitol. The products are stated to be active against leukaemia. According to the Provisional Specification the compounds may also be made by reaction between the corresponding isomers of 1,4-dibromobutane-2,3-diol or the corresponding dichloro or diiodo compounds and a methanesulphonic acid salt, or by reacting the corresponding isomer of 1,2 : 3,4-dioxidobutane with methanesulphonic acid. The stereoisomers and the racemate of 1,4-diiodobutane-2,3-diol are prepared by treatment of the corresponding isomer of 1,2 : 3,4-dioxidobutane with aqueous hydrogen iodide.
