Abstract

H2 or H2O enriched in deuterium is produced by exchange of the D isotope between counter-currents of H2 and H2O, in the presence of a catalyst, wherein the H2 is passed in counter-current to a moving bed of catalyst supported on a granular, porous material carrier, which carrier has the liquid water adsorbed thereon, but in amount between 5 and 40 wt. per cent such that agglomeration of the particles of carrier does not occur. The carrier may be silica gel of grain size 0,1-10 mm. The process is carried out at not above 300 DEG C. or 1,000 atmospheres. The process may be carried out in a dual-temperature system at 10 DEG C. and 150 DEG C. at constant pressure with a mixture of H2 and N2 for NH3 production and the water adsorbed on the carrier is passed in a closed cycle. The catalysts may be Group VIII metals or oxides thereof, prepared by treating the carrier with a solution of a metal compound which is converted to the oxide, or metal.
