Abstract

895,899. Stretching. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. July 4, 1960, No. 23316/60. Class 83 (4). A machine for stretching profiled metal articles, having sets of clamping jaws and gripperheads for housing each set of jaws, has at least one clamping jaw angularly adjustable to the other jaws of its set by being mounted in the gripperhead so as to be rotatable about a longitudinal axis independently of the other jaws. A profiled metal article to be stretched is held at its ends in gripperheads 12, 14 connected by tie rods 16 to crossheads 18. The head 14 is adjustable along a main frame 10 by an electric motor 30 and is locked in position by a peg engaging a hole in the frame 10, the peg being lifted and lowered by a chain 34 attached to a piston of an air cylinder 35. The head 12 is moved longitudinally to effect stretching by a hollow hydraulic ram 20 and is returned by cylinder means 24. Each jaw 40 in a gripperhead is guided along an inclined surface of a block 44 in the head and is moved to close on to the article to be stretched by a piston-rod 60 in an air cylinder 56 carried by the block 44. The block 44 is adjustable angularly along an arcuate guide 68 in the head.
