Abstract

895,882. Cleaning bottles. THOMAS HILL ENGINEERING CO. (HULL) Ltd. April 4, 1961 [Jan. 2, 1960], No. 159/60. Class 138 (1). A bottle cleaning machine for continuous operation includes a plurality of interconnected clearing heads 10 each adapted to retain a bottle between a seat 21 and a spring urged cup 29 and to carry it in a substantially vertical plane by means of a chain conveyer 11 driven by four pairs of chain wheels (two pairs shown at 13, 15) such that each bottle is inverted and receives a jet of cleaning fluid from a jet tube 34 which is projected against the action of a spring 35, on a piston 32, by the introduction of the cleaning fluid (preferably air) under pressure via pipes 33 and 41 to a cylinder 31. Bottles are fed and discharged singly by a conveyer 18 co-operating with two star wheels (one shown at 16) and a spacing worm (not shown). A roller 27 carried by each head 10 co-operates with a cam 28 to lift the rod 24 carrying the cup 29 against the action of a spring 25. Suction may be applied at a duct 42 for collecting foreign matter discharged from the bottle through the cup 29. A single motor 44 may be used to drive (a) the chain conveyer 11, (b) the star wheels to feed and discharge the bottles and (c) a shaft 50 which rotates an air distribution head 37 arranged to allow passage of compressed air from a source G to the flexible pipes 33 when the latter are in register with an arcuate slot 40 in a plate 39.
