Abstract
894,896. Forging springs. OPEL A.G., ADAM. Dec. 14, 1960 [Dec. 24, 1959], No. 42998/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A spring leaf is made by pressing a bar 10 to the required transverse cross-sectional shape and dimensions in a die 16, 17. The bar of drawn or or rolled stock, may be of uniform section throughout, but is preferably of circular section shaped by machining or hammering to provide tapering portions 12, 13 and uniform end portions 14, 15. After heating to forging temperature, preferably in a protective or reducing atmosphere, the bar is forged to uniform or tapering thickness and with or without camber in the hammer or press 20, the eyes 23, 24, Fig. 10, are then bent over and the leaf hardened and tempered. All these operations may be performed in one heat or the leaf may be re-heated after forging or after bending the ends. Finally the leaf may be shot-peened or sand-blasted and coated to prevent corrosion.
