Abstract

894,651. Weaving shaped fabrics. KOPPELMAN, E. May 30, 1958 [June 5, 1957; April 23, 1958], No. 17405/58. Class 142(4) A fabric consisting of separate plies interwoven along spaced lines is erectable from its original flat condition into a structure of honeycomb or like shape. As shown in Fig. 2, layers of warp 312<SP>1</SP>, 312<SP>11</SP> are woven for a length equal to one side of a hexagonal cell; the warps are then combined in pairs and woven to form cell sides 330, after which they are again woven separately to form the remaining sides of the cells. Squaresectioned cells may be woven by omitting the walls 330.The cells may be open-ended, in which case the wefts are interwoven with a group of warp threads spaced from the edge of the fabric to form a false selvedge which is discarded when the wefts are subsequently cut at the edges of the fabric. Alternatively, the ends of the cells may be closed by weft threads 322, Fig. 3, extending vertically from wall to wall when the fabric is erected; in order to provide the necessary length of weft thread, the shuttle emerging from one ply loops the weft round a wire spaced from the edge of the fabric before entering the next ply above or below on the next pick; to cater for the different lengths required between the sloping walls 312<SP>1</SP>, 312<SP>11</SP>, a number of such wires are provided at different distances from the fabric and are selected by the pattern mechanism. The fabrics may be woven from glass, nylon, or cotton for use as reinforcement in synthetic resin articles, or they may be woven from wire, in which case the crossing points of the warp and weft may be secured together by dipping the erected fabric in solder or braze metal or by weaving from wire coated with such metal and subsequently heating the fabric.
