Abstract

893,827. Electric cable terminations. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. June 17, 1960 [June 17, 1959], No. 20866/59. Class 36. In the manufacture of an electric cable termination, adapted for use as a lead through insulator by the provision of a metal ring 22 integral with the assembly, the cable insulation 3, screen 4, and sheath 5 are cut back to reveal appropriate lengths of cable, insulation and screen and encased in a moulded dielectric body 9, which carries the metal ring. The metal ring 22 has flanges (Fig. 3, not shown) for fixing the termination on to a wall. A stress cone 20, formed from impregnated paper, is threaded on to the cable and insulation, and lead screening wire 21, which is earthed at the cable sheath, is wound round its tapering portion. A metal cap 6 is placed over the end of the multi-strand cable 2, to ensure that no moisture leaks into the cable. The whole assembly is placed in a mould 30 having a recess 36 to hold metal ring 22 and fix its position on the cable assembly. Epoxy resin is now poured into the mould through channels 38 and 42, until the cap 6 is partly covered, thus sealing the cable 2. Good contact between the resin and insulation 3 is ensured by coating the insulation with bitumen. Grooves 23 are cut in the inner surface of the metal ring 22 to give a firm setting. A temporary seal of tape 45 is provided to stop escape of the epoxy resin while it is in the molten state. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the paper stress cone is replaced by a hollow metal cone having a number of holes in its wall to allow the entry of the molten plastics. The moulding may also, as further described in Specification 893,828, incorporate one or more than one annulus of inorganic material, having the outer rims projecting above the surface of the moulding and acting as sheds to increase the flash-over voltage of the termination.
