Abstract
893,796. Stoppering. BETTS & CO. Ltd. Aug. 13, 1959 [June 2, 1958], No. 17492/58. Class 125(2). An apparatus for capping containers having a screw-threaded neck comprises means for aligning the neck with the cap, means for bringing the cap 47 into contact with the screwed neck and means for frictionally holding the container while the cap is rotated to screw it on to the neck. Collapsible tubes 4 are carried between rubber rollers 6 mounted on chains 8 on a conveyer which is advanced intermittently. Caps are supplied sequentially fromahopper (not shown) to a cradle 46. As each tube 4 aligns with the cap, an arm 54 is lowered and a roller 57 tilts a bell-crank 51, 48 about its pivot 49 to flick the cap into the mouth of a chuck 33 ; a pressure plate 60 is simultaneously brought down on to the tube 4. The cradle then pivots away laterally from the cap-chuck and a plunger 76 is driven, hydraulically by a ram 70, to enter the open end of the tube 4 and engage the inside of the shoulder. The carriage 29 carrying the cap is then advanced and the chuck rotated. The various parts are now moved in the reverse order and the capped tube is moved on to a second station where the inside of the open end is sprayed with a sealing compound. A reciprocable safety ejector 77 is pushed through the chuck axially to remove a cap, if accidentally retained there, before the next operation. All the components are driven in timed sequence from a main shaft, Fig. 1 (not shown).
