893,743. Magnetic couplings. BURROUGHS CORPORATION. Nov. 2, 1959 [Nov. 13, 1958], No. 37133/59. Class 35. [Also in Group XVI] In apparatus for automatically stacking and edge-aligning documents (see Group XVI), feed rollers 84 for feeding documents into a hopper are driven through a hysteresis clutch-control mechanism. A shaft 90 is non-rotatably mounted in supports 94, 96 and has rotatably mounted thereon an annular body member 98. A cup-like member 100 engages the periphery of the member 98 and is rotatable relatively thereto within the limits imposed by a pin-andslot connection 102, 106. Annular magnetic members 108, 110 are secured to the members 100, 98, respectively. Each of the members 108, 110 has a plurality of North and South poles arranged alternately about its circumference, Fig. 5. A collar 112 rotatably mounted on the shaft 90 carries an annular flange 116 of magnetically permeable, high hysteresis loss material, e.g. a cobalt steel alloy, positioned between the magnetic members 108, 110 and is secured to a tube 122, also rotatably mounted on the shaft 90, which carries the rollers 84. The members 98, 100 are rotated by a capstan 126 and produce a rotating magnetic field across the air gap defined by the poles of each magnet; the flange 116 is magnetically coupled to the rotating magnets 108, 110 and thus transmits the torque of the members 98, 100 to the rollers 84. The maximum torque output is obtained when the magnets are so oriented that the poles of the one are aligned with opposite poles of the other. The minimum torque output is obtained when the poles of one magnet are aligned with like poles of the other. The positions of the magnets, and hence the amount of torque applied to the rollers 84, are adjusted by turning the member 100 in relation to the member 98. The torque output is adjusted so that when a predetermined amount of friction is applied to the rollers 84 the clutch slips. Specifications 881,016 and 893,744 are referred to.
