Abstract

893,601. Filters. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. Sept. 28, 1959 [Oct. 11, 1958], No. 32511/58. Class 46. A filter element for an oil filter comprises a strip of synthetic-resin-impregnated paper 1 folded about fold lines 2 and jointed at its ends to form an annular series of pleats 6 which are spaced apart by dimples 3 at the outer periphery and by portions 7 of the strip, presenting a continuous cylindrical surface, at the liner periphery. The two halves of the pleat 6 are joined by adhesive at their adjacent faces which are provided with grooves or ribs to provide channels for the passage of filtered material. Perforate support tubes 12 and 15 are filtered to the peripheries of the element and are of such diameter to apply a radial compression to the element ensuring that the pleats at the lurid periphery fit closely against the tube 15. End caps 16 are secured to the element by adhesive or gaskets located in grooves in the ends of the tube 15 by span over flanges. Tools are described for forming the folds 2.
