Abstract
A silicone rubber stock comprises (1) 100 parts by weight of an organopolysiloxane having an average of from 1,9 to 2,01 inclusive methyl, phenyl, vinyl or 3,3,3-trifluoropropyl radicals per silicon atom, at least 25% of the radicals being methyl radicals and the organopolysiloxane having a viscosity of at least 500 cs. at 25 DEG C. and (2) from 1 to 10 parts by weight of indanthrene blue, phthalocyanine, a chelated metal complex of phthalocyanine, or terphenyl. The compositions may contain inorganic fillers, e.g. silicus (native, precipitated, fume and raerogels), carbon black, metal oxides and silicates, low viscosity hydroxylated siloxanes and other conventional additives. The compositions may be vulcanized with, for example ditertiary butyl peroxide, sulphur or an orthosilicate or polysilicate such as methyl silicate and a catalyst such as dibutylt in diacetate, lead octoate or methylamine. The vulcanizing agent and filler are preferably used in amounts of from 1 to 10 and to 300 parts by weight respectively per 100 parts of organopolysiloxane. In a typical example 100 parts of a phenylmethylpolysiloxane gum, 3 parts of indanthrene blue, 30 parts of fume silica, 8 parts of a 50 cs. hydroxylated dimethylpolysiloxane and 5,6 parts of dibenzoyl peroxide were milled and cured for 5 minutes at 125 DEG to 135 DEG C. The resistance of the resulting elastomer at 200 DEG C. to radiation from a cobalt-60 source is compared with that of an elastomer prepared from a similar composition which contains no indanthrene blue. The elastomers may be used under conditions of high temperature and high radiation intensity, for example as electrical insulation or as gaskets. Specification 883,266 is referred to.
