Abstract

893,329. Gas purification apparatus. HOLMES & CO. Ltd., W. C. May 16, 1958 [May 16, 1957], No. 15531/57. Class 55 (2). A container for gas purifying material comprises an outer vertical wall and an inner vertical wall defining an annular space between them for a single layer of purifying material, and a grid extending between and supported by the inner and outer walls and spaced a short distance above the lower ends of the walls to support the purifying material, the arrangement being that when a series of such containers is mounted one above another, gas inlet openings for unpurified gas are provided or formed at or near the junction of some of the inner walls to supply gas to the space beneath the grids of alternate containers, and gas outlet openings are provided or formed at or near the junction between some of the outer walls so as to communicate with the space beneath the grids of the intermediate containers. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a tower 10 has an inlet 12 for impure gas at its base and an outlet 13 for purified gas in its side wall. Within the tower are disposed two series of containers 14, 15 in alternate relationship, all the containers 14 being alike and all the containers 15 being alike. Each container has an outer wall 16 and an inner wall 17 defining an annular space between them. Walls 16, 17 are rigidly connected together by means of a series of radially disposed bars 18, which serve to support a grid 19 for purifying material 20. Grid 19 is made in sectors, each disposed between and supported by two bars 18. The outer wall 16 of each container may be circular, octagonal or any other desired shape. Inner walls 17 are aligned with one another such that they form a central vertical duct for gas entering through the inlet 12. Outer walls 16 are aligned with one another also and are spaced from the wall of the tower 10 to permit flow of gas from the containers to outlet 13. The inner wall 16 of the lowermost container is sealed around the gas inlet opening by means of rubber or like resilient means 2. The inner wall 17 of each alternate container 15 is sealed relatively to the inner wall of each intermediate containter 14 by similar means. Inner wall 17 of each intermediate container 14 has a series of openings 24 below the grid 19 so that impure gas may pass from the central vertical duct above inlet 12 through the purifying material 20 and thence to outlets formed between the tops of purifying material in containers 14 and the grids of containers 15. Thereafter the gas passes in a purified state to outlet 13. Liquid sealing is provided between the outer walls of the containers by open channels 25 and container flanges 26 projecting downwardly into liquid contained in the channels. The channels 25 of a container may also be adapted to accommodate the bottom of either the outer or the inner wall of the container immediately above.
