Abstract

893,316. Vibration damping. LORD MANUFACTURlNG CO. June 15, 1960 [June 15, 1959; Jan. 11, 1960], No. 20975/60. Class 108(3). A damped beam comprises a layer 7, Fig. 1, of resilient material having a relatively high internal friction interposed between and secured to the faces of opposed spaced elongated metal plates 8, 3, the plate 3 having longitudinally spaced slots 5, the layer 7 having a stiffness substantially less than the stiffness of any one of the plates. The Specification describes a number of embodiments in which the beams have angle, channel and top-hat sections. The slots may be formed in each of the opposed metal plates and are arranged staggered with respect to each other. The slots may be shaped so that the side walls thereof inter-engage at a predetermined beam deflection in either direction. The slots may divide the elongated member into a plurality of competely separate sections.
