893,293. Moderator structures. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Oct. 21, 1958 [Oct. 22, 1957], No. 33574/58. Class 39(4) A moderator core structure comprises a number of columns formed of superimposed graphite bars arranged such that the change in dimensions in a direction parallel to the core axis due to Wigner growth in certain of the bars is offset by Wigner shrinkage effect in other bars of the column. As shown in Fig. 4 a column comprises a layer 10 of vertical bars separated from the next vertical layer by two layers 11, 12 of horizontal bars. The dimensions of the bars 10, 11, 1, 12 in the vertical direction are arranged such that shrinkage of the bars in a vertical layer 10 is offset by the growth in the layers 11; 12. The horizontal layers may, alternatively, comprise tiles 17, Fig. 9, which have zero Wigner expansion in a direction at right angles to the vertical planes in which the tiles of a given layer abut one another. The tiles and vertical bars may be keyed together by mortise and tenon joints (Fig. 13, not shown). In a further arrangement, Fig. 14, a graphite sleeve 40 forming part of a fuel element and coolant channel extends through tiles 43, 44 and bears on spherical seats 49, 50 formed in the vertical bars 41, 42. The bars and tiles bear on one another to take the vertical load but clearances h are provided at the joint tenons. Specification 822,788 is referred to.
