Abstract

893,233. Surface hardening. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 16, 1959 [Oct. 24, 1958], No. 34170/58. Class 72. A process for treating the surface of a metallic article comprises arranging the object as one of two electrodes in an electrolytic bath containing an aqueous solution of a salt as the electrolyte and discharging a capacitor with such polarity that the article is the cathode, the magnitude of the charge being such that an electric discharge occurs across a gas or vapour envelope on the surface. As shown, the article 3 may be immersed in a 10% solution of sodium carbonate in a vessel 1, which is also provided with an electrode 9, and be connected to one plate 5 of a variable capacitor 6, the other plate of the capacitor being connected through a switch 8 to the electrode 9. The capacitor may be charged from a direct current source and discharged through the electrolyte. A thin gas or vapour envelope 13 is formed on the surface of the article and a high current discharge is produced across the envelope. A continuous direct current may be applied across the electrodes to provide a continuous envelope or the electrolyte may be heated to a temperature below the boiling point. Specifications 893,231 and 893,232 are referred to.
