A process for applying a thermoplastic coating to a web comprises feeding a thermoplastic material to the gap between a pair of heated rolls 1a, 1b, the rolls having different peripheral velocities, forming a film of the material in the gap, transferring the film from the roll 1b having the higher velocity, the web having a velocity corresponding to that of the roll 1b, and cooling the web. The material, which may be polyvinyl chloride, polythene, polystyrene, polyamides, or cellulose acetate, may be delivered in pellet or powder form to the gap. The roll 1b should have a peripheral velocity at least ten times as great as that of the roll 1a, and the temperature of the roll 1b may be the same as or 1 ‹ to 20‹ C. greater than that of the roll 1a. The web may be preheated at 5, imprinted by a roll 3, and may traverse a cooling roll 6.
